Russian Court Sentences American Citizen to 15 Years for Espionage

A U.S. citizen originally from Russia has received a 15-year prison sentence in Russia on espionage charges, adding to a prior conviction.

Russian news outlets reported that Eugene Spector, born and raised in Leningrad before becoming a U.S. citizen, received this additional sentence.

Espionage charges against Spector were filed in August of the previous year; however, specifics of the case remain undisclosed.

The U.S. State Department acknowledged reports of the case and stated they are monitoring the situation.

Spector, a former executive at a Russian medical equipment firm, was previously sentenced in September 2022 to three and a half years imprisonment for facilitating bribes to an aide of former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.

Anastasia Alekseyeva, the aide, received a 12-year sentence in April for accepting bribes, which included two lavish overseas vacations.

Dvorkovich served as deputy prime minister under Dmitry Medvedev from 2012 to 2018 and currently heads the international chess federation FIDE.
