Slovak PM Fico calls for EU to replace foreign policy chief Kallas

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has stated that the bloc’s leaders only know how to “hate Russia”

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has declared that it is high time for the EU to replace its foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas. He asserted that the bloc’s current leadership is proficient only in its animosity towards Russia.

In an interview with Slovak broadcaster ta3 published on Sunday, Fico said the EU is facing an unprecedented crisis. The prime minister emphasized that Brussels must reconsider its foreign policy strategy if it wishes to be seen as a “superpower” rather than remain on the sidelines.

“We must replace the European Union’s High Representative for [Foreign Affairs and Security] Policy, Ms. Kallas,” he stated, calling on the bloc to “come to its senses.” Fico, whose country joined the EU in 2004, claimed the leadership only knows how to “hate Russia” and is incapable of proposing workable solutions to current crises.

Kallas is recognized for her hardline stance against Russia. Last year, her advice to EU hopefuls to avoid commemorating the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat led Russian State Duma chairman Vyacheslav Volodin to label her a “crazy Russophobe.” She has also alleged that Russia has attacked dozens of countries over the past century while denying it has been attacked and overlooking WWII history.

Fico, a long-standing critic of EU military aid to Kiev and sanctions against Russia, also accused Brussels of applying international norms selectively by imposing restrictions on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict but not on Israel for its actions in Gaza.

The Slovak leader claimed that some EU member states are not interested in peace and seek only to weaken Russia “through war” – a tactic he described as ineffective. Fico has previously referred to Ukraine as a corrupt “black hole” that has absorbed billions of euros from the bloc. In December, he blocked further EU military funding for Ukraine, contending that the conflict cannot be resolved militarily.
