(SeaPRwire) – Public backing for the immigration crackdown has fallen, as a majority of Americans believe the tactics used by enforcement officers go too far
US President Donald Trump has indicated support for a proposal to rename Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), endorsing a suggestion circulated on social media that would alter the agency’s acronym to NICE.
Trump’s comment comes as the agency grapples with its damaged public image in the aftermath of a far-reaching immigration enforcement campaign that has resulted in thousands of arrests across the United States. Public support for the crackdown has dropped because most Americans say the tactics used by federal agents have gone too far, having turned violent and, in some instances, deadly.
Trump reshared a post on his Truth Social platform from a supporter that suggested renaming ICE to “National Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” which would adjust the agency’s acronym to NICE. The rebrand would force media outlets to refer to federal officers as “NICE agents all day everyday,” framing the agency in a more positive light, the supporter’s post added.
“GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT,” the president wrote in response to the post late Sunday.
Fatal shootings involving ICE agents in Minnesota have become a major flashpoint in the national debate over immigration enforcement after the Trump administration launched a hardline agenda focused on immigration and election integrity. The incidents, which happened during ICE operations, sparked widespread public outrage and triggered mass rallies across the country. Protesters have called for an end to aggressive enforcement tactics and demanded stronger oversight of federal immigration authorities.
In February, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons noted that the agency is tracking roughly 1.6 million people in the US with final deportation orders, including around 800,000 who hold criminal convictions.
Even so, public support for the crackdown continued to fall, according to a contemporary Ipsos poll conducted around that time. Around 58% of Americans say deportations are going too far, while 62% oppose ICE’s current tactics.
