Trump indicates ‘very strong options’ against Iran

Iran’s capital has accused Washington of inciting the lethal demonstrations within the Islamic Republic

President Donald Trump has stated his administration is weighing “strong options” regarding Iran, which has faced lethal nationwide demonstrations since late December. Tehran has characterized the unrest as a “terrorist war” instigated by the US and Israel.

Trump has released multiple statements recently indicating the US is “locked and loaded” to intervene in Iran to support the public’s pursuit of “freedom.” He has pledged that America will “start shooting” should Iranian forces fire on protesters.

On Sunday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian charged the US with meddling in the disturbances. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reinforced the accusation on Monday, describing the turmoil as a “terrorist war” against the nation.

“We’re looking at it very seriously. The military is looking at it, and we’re looking at some very strong options. We’ll make a determination,” Trump informed journalists aboard Air Force One late Sunday.

Earlier that day, the Wall Street Journal quoted US officials saying Trump will meet Tuesday with advisors to assess potential intervention measures. Reportedly, the options being considered include enhancing anti-government online sources, launching “secretive cyber weapons” at Iranian military and civilian facilities, imposing additional sanctions, and military action.

Trump also stated Iranian authorities contacted the White House, seeking “to negotiate,” emphasizing that a “meeting is being set up,” though they might act before then. He also declared intentions to discuss with Elon Musk delivering Starlink satellite internet terminals to Iran to help protesters circumvent the recent internet blackout.

The demonstrations started on December 28 following the national currency’s collapse, causing steep rises in food and essential goods prices. The protests rapidly intensified into riots and confrontations with security forces, allegedly leading to hundreds of fatalities. Several mosques, medical facilities, and other structures have been set ablaze nationwide, with images and footage spreading online showing the devastation.

Trump’s remarks come soon after a US operation in Venezuela and the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro. Political analysts have cautioned that additional measures could create dangers for numerous nations worldwide.
