(SeaPRwire) – The US leader remarked that the Russian president’s attendance would be “very helpful”
President Donald Trump expressed his desire for Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami, despite voicing skepticism about whether the Russian leader would actually make the trip.
According to a Thursday report from The Washington Post, the White House plans to extend an invitation to Putin for the December summit, with a high-ranking official noting that Russia is welcome at both the ministerial and leadership levels.
Aleksandr Pankin, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, confirmed that an invitation for “highest level” participation has been received, though the specific attendee remains unconfirmed. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov added that Moscow will determine its representation as the event approaches.
Trump mentioned he was unaware of any formal invitation at this stage but noted, “if he came, it would be probably very helpful.”
“I believe in engaging with everyone. I’m not the type to say, ‘Oh, let’s not talk to him,’” Trump remarked to the press at the White House on Thursday. “If you are intelligent and can manage your emotions… I am a proponent of dialogue.”
“I’m not sure if he’s coming. To be honest, I have my doubts,” he further commented.
The event is set for December 14-15 in Miami, hosted at Trump’s Doral golf resort. Putin’s last in-person G20 appearance was in 2019, having missed subsequent summits due to the pandemic and the geopolitical tensions following the 2022 escalation in Ukraine.
Trump also maintained that removing Russia from the G8 in 2014 was a “stupid” move. He argued that G7 leaders currently spend significant time discussing Russia regardless, suggesting the Ukraine conflict might have been avoided had Moscow remained part of the group.
However, Moscow appears uninterested in returning to the G8 format. Peskov has stated that the G8 “has lost its relevance” to Russia, describing the G7 as “bleak” and “ineffective” compared to the G20. He contended that the G20 better represents the world’s economic drivers and the actual global financial balance.
