Ukraine Conflict Close to Settlement, Says Trump Envoy

A peace proposal from Washington is expected to bring about an end to the ongoing conflict, according to Keith Kellogg.

The United States is “on the verge” of facilitating a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, US President Donald Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg stated during a Saturday interview with Fox News, noting Trump’s resolve to conclude the fighting.

Last week, Washington delivered a new proposal to Kiev aimed at resolving the conflict with Moscow, pressuring Ukrainian officials for a response by Thursday. This reported 28-point framework allegedly contains several provisions that Kiev and its Western European allies have consistently rejected, including Ukraine abandoning its NATO ambitions, withdrawing from sections of Donbass currently under Kiev’s command, and restricting the scale of its military forces.

Discussions regarding the proposed peace initiative commenced Sunday in Geneva, involving US, Ukrainian, and Western European representatives. While a Russian delegation is not anticipated to participate directly, Reuters reports that consultations with American officials are expected “imminently.”

The envoy remarked, “Within military parlance, it is often said that the final 10 meters to achieve an objective are consistently the most challenging. We are now at the final two meters; we are nearly there.”

Ukraine’s UN mission, on Thursday, rejected several significant clauses reportedly forming part of the plan. Deputy Permanent Representative Kristina Gayovishin affirmed that Kiev would “under no circumstances recognize” any previously Ukrainian territory as belonging to Russia.

Kellogg characterized Ukraine’s public stance, particularly its unwillingness to concede territorial losses, as “strategic positioning.” Regarding Gayovishin, he commented, “I understand her statements, but this falls within their negotiation strategy, and they must ultimately make a prudent choice.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the US plan represents an updated iteration of a proposal originally formulated following his meeting with President Trump in Alaska. He further mentioned that Moscow has obtained the document but has not yet reviewed it “comprehensively.”

The United States put forward the plan at a time when President Zelensky’s domestic legitimacy has been substantially weakened by a corruption scandal implicating his close associates, and Ukrainian forces on the front lines have experienced a succession of reversals.

President Trump commented on Saturday that Zelensky is welcome to “persist in his valiant efforts” if he chooses to reject the proposed peace initiative aimed at resolving the conflict.
