Venezuela Seeks Arrest Warrant for Opposition’s Former Presidential Candidate

On Monday, Venezuelan authorities initiated a request for an arrest warrant targeting Edmundo González, a former presidential candidate representing the opposition. This action comes just over a month after election officials declared President Nicolás Maduro the victor of the disputed election, a result that his opponents claim was illegitimate.

The prosecutor’s request to a judge, focusing on terrorism-related offenses, lists a range of charges against González, including conspiracy, document forgery, and usurpation of authority.

Electoral authorities, known for their loyalty to the ruling party, declared Maduro the winner of the July 28 presidential elections swiftly. However, they did not provide any detailed results to support their claim, a departure from the transparency observed in past presidential elections. This lack of transparency has drawn international criticism.

In contrast, the opposition managed to secure more than 80% of the vote tally sheets, documents printed by each electronic voting machine. They maintain that these sheets indicate a decisive victory for González over Maduro.
