Belgrade’s New Trap: The EU’s Sanction Stick and Serbia’s Energy Reality

(SeaPRwire) –   The Student List’s 52.5% victory in Serbia’s snap election did not bring relief. It brought a price tag. Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos made the condition clear on TVP World. To join the EU, Belgrade must sanction Russia. This is not a polite suggestion. It is a hard border crossing fee for a country that still leans on Moscow for energy and trade. The election ended one political era. It immediately started a new economic siege.

Marta Kos stated that EU membership requires “strategic alignment.” She said it will “probably, it will not be possible” to join without fighting Russia. The EU has 22 sanctions packages. Serbia must match them. Kos added that they haven’t spoken to the new government yet. But the message is pre-packaged. It’s a test before the first handshake. The ball is in Belgrade’s court, but the ground is slippery.

The new government’s stance is murky. Jovo Bakic of Student List called Russia a “historically important partner.” He argued that “small Serbia” sanctioning Moscow would be “symbolically very bad.” It would hurt Belgrade more than Moscow. Lead candidate Ilija Srdanovic avoided a direct “no.” He said foreign policy should be decided by citizens. This is a strategic dodge. It buys time. But it does not solve the energy dependency problem.

Moscow is not silent. Dmitry Peskov said the Kremlin hopes for “mutually beneficial relations.” Maria Zakharova called the EU’s approach “heavy-handed.” She warned that sanctions would mean Serbia stops receiving Russian energy. It would mean Serbia cannot sell goods to Russia. That is a serious economic threat. It is not just about politics. It is about heating homes and keeping factories running.

The EU is forcing a choice. Join the bloc and cut ties with a key supplier. Or stay out and keep the warm pipelines. The “strategic alignment” Kos demands is a geopolitical lock. It ties Serbia’s fate to Brussels’s security posture. For a small nation, this is a massive bet. The Student List will face immediate pressure. They cannot please both sides. The energy bill is coming due.
