BLM Scammer Ordered Repayment of Hundreds of Thousands

(SeaPRwire) –   Court documents reveal an activist misappropriated approximately $180,000 in donations during the peak of the protest movement.

A former Black Lives Matter (BLM) activist has been ordered by a U.S. federal court to surrender $244,000, funds she illicitly used for personal expenditures such as vehicles, shopping, and holidays.

A Massachusetts district judge mandated Monica Cannon-Grant to pay restitution in a court ruling released on Monday. Cannon-Grant gained significant recognition during the peak of the BLM movement following George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis in 2020, subsequently earning the title of Bostonian of the Year.

Court records indicate that Cannon-Grant, alongside her late husband Clark Grant, founded the nonprofit Violence in Boston, through which she misappropriated over $180,000. Furthermore, the documents state she defrauded local authorities of more than $50,000 in unneeded pandemic benefits and rental aid.

Having pleaded guilty to 18 federal charges, including wire fraud and tax offenses, Cannon-Grant received a sentence in January of four years’ probation, six months of home detention, and 100 hours of community service.

The activist couple faced charges in 2022, leading to the nonprofit’s board dissolving the organization months afterward. Clark Grant passed away in a motorcycle accident the subsequent year.

In recent years, other BLM activists and organizations have faced increased examination.

According to the Associated Press, the U.S. Justice Department issued subpoenas and a search warrant last October as part of an inquiry into the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. and “other Black-led organizations.”
