The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on social media that Capt. Omer Neutra, a 21-year-old American-Israeli citizen from Long Island, New York, was killed in action on October 7, 2023, and his remains are being held in Gaza.
According to the IDF, Neutra served as a tank platoon commander in the Armored Corps’ 77th Battalion, 7th Brigade. A post on X stated, “May his memory be a blessing.”
Reports prior to the IDF announcement indicated Neutra was alive and held captive. His death elevates the number of American hostages in Gaza to seven. Their families again experienced an empty seat at a recent gathering, emphasizing their plea for the hostages’ prioritization.
Cease-fire talks have largely stalled as Israel’s military operation against Hamas continues.
Many hope that even if the Biden administration fails to secure the hostages’ release before January, the incoming administration might shift the negotiations and achieve their release.
President-elect Trump stated during his campaign, “We want our hostages back, and they better be back before I assume office, or you will be paying a very big price.”
