Suspected Terrorist Attack at German Christmas Market: Car Drives into Crowd

Chaos erupted at a Magdeburg Christmas market Friday when a car plowed into a crowd, prompting a suspected terrorist investigation.

A local rescue service spokesperson, as cited by AFP, reported between 60 and 80 injuries. Officials are investigating.

Several injuries are critical; reports from German public broadcaster MDR indicate at least two fatalities.

The driver’s identity and intent remain unclear, although authorities have confirmed an arrest.

BILD reported the car traveled approximately 400 meters through the market, a detail police haven’t yet confirmed to Digital.

Magdeburg police announced on X, “Extensive police operations are underway at the Magdeburg Christmas market. The city center Christmas market is closed. Further updates will follow.”

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in a message on X, stated, “Reports from Magdeburg indicate a serious incident. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand with them and the people of Magdeburg. My gratitude goes to the dedicated rescue workers during this difficult time.”

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had previously urged vigilance at Christmas markets, despite the absence of specific threats.

The incident recalls past German attacks, such as the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack where a truck killed 12 and injured approximately 50.

This is a developing story.
