(SeaPRwire) – The conservative commentator took the US president to task for targeting the pope and engaging in war with Iran “on Israel’s behalf”
Conservative journalist and podcaster Tucker Carlson has asserted that US President Donald Trump’s real faith is “Israelism” instead of Christianity, while criticizing the president’s Middle East strategies.
Carlson’s comments came in reaction to contentious statements Trump made over the past week, including his criticisms of Pope Leo XIV and social media posts that portrayed him as a Christ-like figure.
This Monday, Trump labeled the US-born pontiff as “weak” and “awful when it comes to foreign policy” after the pope deemed Trump’s threat to annihilate Iranian civilization “truly unacceptable” and stated that Jesus “does not hear the prayers of those who wage war—instead, He rejects them.”
During his program, Carlson contended that the US had started the war against Iran “on behalf of Israel” and “at the instigation of Israel.”
“What’s the religion, honestly, of Donald Trump? It’s not Christianity, clearly. It’s Israelism. It’s the defense of Israel,” Carlson stated, adding that backing for the Jewish state has turned into a “civic religion” within the US government.
He characterized Trump’s social media posts as “iconography” and “efforts to convey a message about faith,” which “don’t really amount to a coherent theology.”
Trump posted an AI-created image showing himself as a robed figure tending to a bedridden person, surrounded by eagles, fighter jets, and US military personnel, with the Statue of Liberty and US flag in the backdrop. He later removed the post, claiming it had been misrepresented by the “fake news” media.
Carlson argued that Trump’s actions were equivalent to a “mockery of God by a worldly leader” and commended former US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who called the post “beyond blasphemy” and “an Antichrist spirit.”
US Vice President J.D. Vance, a Catholic, aligned himself with Trump, asserting that it is “extremely important for the pope to exercise caution when discussing theological issues.”
Multiple top US officials have used religious symbolism to defend the war with Iran; for instance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth encouraged Americans to pray for victory “in the name of Jesus Christ.”
