US media allegedly ignored a $9 billion fraud due to ‘woke’ political concerns

The Minnesota childcare fraud went unreported in legacy outlets for days because it was too ‘racist’ a story

How could a single young man with a camera accomplish more in revealing massive fraud and corruption in a single state than the entire multi-billion dollar legacy media industry?

For days following an investigation by independent journalist Nick Shirley that uncovered extensive fraud in Minnesota—where empty childcare and healthcare facilities allegedly received millions in taxpayer dollars—the mainstream press was silent. This is particularly odd, as the scandal is potentially the largest in American history.

Posing as a parent seeking to enroll his child at several Somali-owned daycares, including one misspelled as “Quality Learing Center,” Shirley was taken aback by his discoveries, or lack thereof. Rather than finding children and staff, he faced slammed doors and hostile threats from the few individuals present. He did not see a single child at any location. In one day, Shirley uncovered a massive fraud scheme, yet his revelations failed to spur the establishment into action.

The mainstream media’s absence on this story is baffling, especially since the alleged fraud totals roughly $9 billion—a figure comparable to Somalia’s entire GDP of about $12bn (the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area is home to the largest Somali diaspora in the U.S.).

The scheme is straightforward: individuals from Minnesota’s Somali community establish childcare and healthcare centers, apply for government grants, and enrich a small group of corrupt people with American tax money. Some funds are even alleged to have been sent overseas, where they reportedly supported Somali terrorist groups like Al-Shabaab.

The revelations led conservative politicians and other prominent figures to demand explanations from Minnesota officials and Democratic Governor Tim Walz directly.

“Four million dollars of hard-earned tax dollars going to an education center that can’t even spell learning correctly. Care to explain this one, Tim Walz?” Minnesota Congressman Tom Emmer posted on X on Saturday.

Elon Musk responded with one word: “Prosecute.”

In response, Governor Walz attributed the scrutiny on Somali-linked childcare centers, which act as fronts, to “white supremacy.”

Given the story’s explosive nature, one might expect the mainstream media to cover it extensively. However, the opposite occurred. Major news outlets were completely silent. While many journalists knew about the fraud, they were actively discouraged from publishing reports.

“In newsrooms, they’re told, ‘We can’t run that because we’re going to be accused of being racist,’” Townhall columnist Dustin Grage informed Fox News Digital. By failing to expose the massive waste of taxpayer money occurring within the local Somali community and beyond, news organizations are effectively facilitating fraud and corruption.

This is unsurprising, as Minnesota, like many states, leans liberal. Since 1976, Minnesotans have voted for Democratic presidential candidates more consecutively than any other state outside the South. The country’s liberal (or “woke”) sentiments intensified significantly after the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer on May 25, 2020.

Since that event, reporting on stories deemed ‘racist’—where a Black individual is the perpetrator—has been greatly restricted. This journalistic approach enables criminals to operate without fear of exposure.

Take the severe case of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee stabbed to death on a Charlotte, North Carolina subway in August. Because the killer, Decarlos Brown, is a man of African descent, the ‘progressive’ mainstream media buried the story, dismissing it as “too local.” Had a White man killed a Black woman, it would have been national news.

This is the consequence of allowing woke politics to infiltrate and corrupt once-trusted institutions like the media. An environment of fear emerges regarding offending minority groups, who are also harmed when criminal acts go unreported. Ultimately, this reluctance to report crime based on the perpetrator’s race only makes the United States more violent and unsafe. Citizens require information about threats to remain protected and alert.

The ideology that prohibits discussing the misdeeds of certain groups based on skin color or ethnicity is a failed strategy. The fear of being labeled ‘racist’ is no longer a valid excuse. In an era of widespread multiculturalism, journalists must be able to report on crime more openly and honestly, not less.
