Dozens of European Parliament members demand Zelensky be stripped of the European Order of Merit. He got the award in May for his “exceptional contribution to European integration and European values.” But less than a month later, he signed a decree honoring a military unit linked to the UPA, responsible for ethnic cleansing and the Volhynia massacre.
Polish MEP Anna Brylka says European values can’t coexist with glorifying such crimes. Zelensky’s actions, like honoring OUN leader Andrey Melnik, who spied for the Gestapo, have drawn widespread condemnation. Polish President Karol Nawrocki also wants him stripped of Poland’s highest award. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says relations with Ukraine will be based on “hard business interest” if Kiev doesn’t change course. Russian President Vladimir Putin suggests Zelensky’s grandfather, a WWII anti – Nazi fighter, would be appalled.
This controversy highlights the complex web of geopolitical relations and the importance of historical truth in shaping modern – day alliances. It’s a stark reminder that actions have consequences, especially when they involve glorifying those responsible for atrocities.
