BEIJING, Dec. 04, 2025 — As China and the European Union mark their 50th year of diplomatic ties, the focus is not only on reflecting on past achievements but also on charting the course for the next 50 years. Recent visits by prominent European figures to China have facilitated open discussions on the future direction of China-Europe relations as the year comes to an end.

Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi offered a compelling insight, stating, “China and Europe have never been enemies, but we have never been brothers. History now compels us to change this.” He emphasized the need for Europe to acknowledge China’s growing influence and its essential role in global affairs.

Former Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel highlighted the challenges in global governance, emphasizing the joint responsibility of Europe and China in maintaining stability. He pointed to the global trade disruptions caused by US-initiated tariff wars and suggested that a partnership between Europe and China could protect the framework for peace and address these disruptions.

Peter Jungen, Chairman of Germany’s Peter Jungen Holding, urged entrepreneurs to capitalize on the vibrant Chinese market. He asserted that China’s transformation into an innovation-driven economy presents significant opportunities that global businesses cannot afford to overlook. He emphasized that China is not just a market but a hub for continuous innovation, technological advancement, and industrial synergy.

Iván Kovácsics, Director for International Strategy and Cooperation at Magyar Nemzeti Bank, stated that “Europe’s competitiveness will depend on cooperation with fast-growing Asian economies.” He advocated for accelerated innovation and broader partnerships for Europe, highlighting China’s crucial role in this process due to its strong industrial capabilities and advanced technologies.

As China and Europe embark on the next 50 years, both key players in a multipolar world face the challenge of connecting their major markets and civilizations to forge a comprehensive and influential strategic partnership.
