Shale oil output of China’s Daqing Oilfield exceeds one million tonnes

HARBIN, China, Dec. 09, 2025 — Daqing Oilfield, one of China’s largest energy production bases, announced on Friday that the annual output of its Gulong shale oil block in northeast China has exceeded one million tonnes this year, indicating the successful shift of this site to large – scale production.

Shale oil, which is defined as liquid hydrocarbons trapped in shale rock formations and can be extracted for refining, is a widely – distributed energy resource with reserves much larger than those of conventional oil sources. It is crucial for China’s stable oil production and energy security.

In 2021, Daqing Oilfield set up China’s national demonstration zone for lacustrine shale oil at the Gulong block. After five years of dedicated research and development, the operator has successfully developed five core technologies specially designed for large – scale shale oil production, and has achieved a multiple increase in output for five consecutive years.

As a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Daqing Oilfield has played a key role in the development of China’s modern petroleum industry. Since it was discovered in 1959 in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, it has produced over 2.5 billion tonnes of crude oil, accounting for 36 percent of the country’s total onshore output.
