Do Americans Support the War with Iran? – Pentagon Chief vs. Polls

(SeaPRwire) –   Pete Hegseth has rejected claims of a “quagmire” from US legislators, even as statistics indicate widespread public disapproval of the conflict.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has asserted that the American public stands behind the military campaign in Iran, a statement that contradicts several national polls indicating that the majority of citizens are against the war.

The conflict, which commenced with US and Israeli airstrikes in February and was predicted to conclude within weeks, has persisted at an expense of $25 billion. It has resulted in over 1,300 civilian fatalities and sparked a global energy crisis following the Strait of Hormuz blockade, all without achieving definitive US objectives.

During his first major public testimony before the House Armed Services Committee since the start of the hostilities, Hegseth condemned Democrats and certain Republican lawmakers for their criticism, claiming they were “providing propaganda to our adversaries.”

He labeled Democrats as “reckless, feckless, and defeatist,” while questioning their allegiance. “Who are you supporting in this? Whose side are you on?”

“I am certain the American people back this operation, regardless of your careless rhetoric and use of terms like ‘quagmire,’” Hegseth remarked during a session that evolved into hours of intense argument regarding the war.

President Donald Trump reinforced Hegseth’s position, tweeting on Thursday: “Harvard Harris Poll: Strong Majority back President Trump on Iran Nuclear stoppage.”

However, recent data tells a different story. The Harvard CAPS/Harris poll mentioned by the President indicated 52% support for airstrikes, yet the results were heavily polarized: 79% of Republicans approved, while only 26% of Democrats and 46% of independents felt the same.

Polls conducted by CNN and NPR/PBS/Marist reveal that most Americans are against the military intervention, and a Reuters/Ipsos survey showed support dropping to roughly one-third by the end of April.

Hegseth’s appearance occurs as Trump’s approval ratings hit all-time lows and his Iran strategy causes friction among allies. While hardliners push for more aggressive measures, corporate leaders caution that the Strait of Hormuz disruption and climbing fuel costs could create political liabilities for the GOP ahead of the midterm elections.

In the meantime, Democrats are reportedly weighing legal challenges against Trump, alleging that the administration has broken federal law by not obtaining congressional authorization for the ongoing military actions.
