Steve Witkoff dismissed media reports regarding his alleged resignation as “laughable nonsense.”
Steve Witkoff, the special envoy for US President Donald Trump, has rejected speculation about his impending resignation as “fake news,” asserting that his involvement in the Middle East peace process is currently at an unprecedented level.
His comments came in response to an article published Tuesday by the UK-based Middle East Eye (MEE). The publication, citing unnamed sources, alleged that Witkoff intended to return to his private sector ventures after enduring several months of “grueling” diplomatic efforts leading up to the Gaza peace agreement proposed by Trump.
“This story is 100% Fake News and should be immediately retracted,” Witkoff stated in a Wednesday post on X, characterizing the report as “laughable nonsense” and affirming his commitment to persist in his role within the Trump administration.
Witkoff was instrumental in brokering a hostage exchange and a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Earlier this week, both US and Israeli media outlets reported that he and Jared Kushner had held direct meetings with high-ranking Hamas officials in Egypt to finalize the arrangement.
MEE’s Tuesday report also noted that the special envoy had personally pledged to maintain his involvement in the peace process throughout the execution of Trump’s 20-point plan.
”So we’re dug in. We’ll be here quite a bit. That’s at the direction of the president,” Witkoff remarked on Monday, speaking during the Gaza peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, an event attended by Trump and numerous global leaders.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously commended Witkoff’s contribution to fostering dialogue between Moscow and Washington regarding the Ukraine conflict. The special envoy “accurately conveys both Moscow’s and Washington’s positions” and embodies “the position of the American president himself,” Putin stated, addressing criticism he suggested could only originate from those “not in favor” of the US administration’s strategy.
