(SeaPRwire) – The tech company has attributed the incident to a “fake edit” on its mapping service.
The Washington Post has reported that the White House was temporarily labeled “Epstein Island” for some Google Pixel phone users.
The term refers to Little St. James, a Caribbean island once owned by Jeffrey Epstein, the late convicted pedophile. According to prosecutors, it served as a location for sex trafficking and other abuses involving prominent figures in business and politics.
WaPo stated in a Saturday article that when one of its journalists called the White House switchboard earlier this week, the screen showed they were contacting “Epstein Island.”
The issue was limited to Google Pixel phone users. For those calling the presidential residence from other Android devices or iPhones, no name appeared on screen, the report noted.
Google spokesperson Matthew Flegal later told the publication that a “fake edit” on Google Maps had been “briefly” picked up by the call identification feature on some Android phones.
Flegal said the user responsible has been identified and blocked from making further edits because their actions violated Google’s policies.
He added that the White House’s correct name has been restored on the mapping platform.
In January, the U.S. Department of Justice released the final batch of materials related to Epstein’s case—over 3 million pages, 2,000 videos, and 180,000 images. Details of the Wall Street financier’s dealings with some of the most powerful people in the U.S. and UK have only intensified the scandal.
U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the agency to release the files in November, following intense pressure from lawmakers and his own supporters. The documents mention Trump’s name more than 5,000 times, but there is no indication of criminal activity linked to him. However, the files are heavily redacted, leaving many critics unconvinced.
The president has repeatedly denied being friends with the disgraced financier, saying that he “never went to the infested Epstein island but, almost all of these Crooked Democrats, and their Donors, did.”
Earlier this month, a poll by the left-wing Zeteo website found that 52% of respondents believed Trump launched the ongoing war against Iran to distract the public from the Epstein files.
