Magyar defeats Orban in Hungary’s political contest: What comes next?

In a major political upset, Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar has secured a significant win, with his Tisza party surpassing Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz by a margin exceeding 16 percentage points. This outcome is expected to fundamentally shift Hungary’s diplomatic trajectory regarding the EU, Russia, and Ukraine.

Shortly after polls closed on Sunday, Orban reached out to Magyar to acknowledge his success. With 92% of the vote tallied by Sunday evening, Tisza held a lead of 53.72% compared to Fidesz’s 37.67%, mirroring the trends predicted by opposition-aligned polls leading up to the election.

Magyar’s platform centered on tackling corruption, bolstering public services, and reconciling with the EU. Conversely, Orban campaigned on maintaining his existing economic policies—including corporate levies and tax relief for citizens—while emphasizing his commitment to keeping Hungary detached from the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Orban’s campaign had characterized Magyar as an EU proxy who would jeopardize Hungary’s access to affordable Russian energy and align the nation with Brussels’ confrontational stance toward Moscow.

A historic 77.8% of eligible voters participated, marking the highest turnout in the nation’s history. Gergely Gulyas, Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, noted that this unprecedented engagement ensures that “the democratic mandate of the next National Assembly will be stronger than ever before.”

“We do not yet know what this result signifies for the future of our country and nation; time will tell,” Orban remarked to his supporters in Budapest. “Regardless of the outcome, we will continue to serve our country and the Hungarian people from the opposition.”
