The Iranian regime’s promise to release footage of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei isn’t a straightforward attempt to quash health rumors. It’s a calculated geopolitical gamble. For months, Khamenei has been absent from public view. This silence has fueled wild speculation: he’s disfigured from the same strike that killed his father, Ali Khamenei, on Feb28. Or he’s incapacitated. Or worse, dead. The regime’s first attempt to address this—a 12-second undated video released Sunday—fell flat. Foreign media outlets quickly pointed out it might have been recorded before the war. Now, they’re promising more footage. But this isn’t just about setting the record straight. It’s about maintaining the regime’s fragile hold on power.
Official statements stick to a script. Qasem Qoraishi, deputy head of the Basij paramilitary, told Mehr news agency that future footage will show Khamenei among people, in streets, and with military commanders. He said this will “disgrace the enemies and ill-wishers of the Iranian nation.” Authorities have repeatedly insisted Khamenei is actively involved in political and military decision-making. But let’s contrast that with reality. Khamenei hasn’t been seen in public since March, when he was chosen to succeed his father. That’s over two months of silence. The 12-second video did nothing to dispel doubts. It showed him sitting in a circle with officials, but no date or context. Foreign media immediately cast doubt on its timing. This isn’t just a PR problem—it’s a legitimacy crisis.
The regime claims security is the reason for Khamenei’s absence. And there’s some truth to that. US and Israeli strikes have targeted key Iranian leaders. On March17, they killed powerful security chief Ali Larijani. US President Donald Trump has labeled Iran’s leaders “scumbags” and threatened to target more officials if Tehran doesn’t accept his terms. So keeping Khamenei hidden makes sense for his safety. But there’s a deeper issue. In Iran’s revolutionary system, the Supreme Leader’s public presence is a symbol of unity and authority. Without it, loyalty among revolutionary forces and the public starts to erode. The regime can’t afford that. So the footage is a way to reassure supporters that their leader is alive and in control. But if the footage is not recent, or if it looks staged, it will only make things worse.
The geopolitical pendulum is swinging against Iran. If the upcoming footage fails to convince the public and the international community, the regime’s legitimacy will take a hit. US and Israeli officials will likely use this uncertainty to their advantage. They might increase pressure on Tehran, pushing for more concessions. The regime’s next move is critical. It needs to release footage that is clearly recent, shows Khamenei in current situations, and addresses the rumors head-on. But if it can’t do that, the crisis will deepen. The future of Iran’s leadership hangs in the balance.
