(SeaPRwire) – A resolution failed to pass in the Republican-led House by just one vote, one day after a comparable measure was blocked in the Senate
An initiative spearheaded by Democrats to limit US President Donald Trump’s authority to continue waging military action against Iran was rejected in the House of Representatives, 24 hours after a similar proposal was halted in the Senate.
On Thursday, the war powers resolution was defeated in the Republican-majority House by a narrow 214 to 213 margin, with votes largely split along partisan lines. All Republicans except Kentucky’s Thomas Massie opposed the measure, while Ohio’s Warren Davidson cast a present vote. One Democratic lawmaker, Representative Jared Golden of Maine, also voted against the proposal.
Earlier this week, the Senate blocked a matching war powers resolution during a related procedural vote, with a final tally of 52–47. This marked the fourth attempt by the upper chamber to impose limits on presidential authority since the US-Israeli bombing campaign launched in late February.
The measure considered in Thursday’s House vote was a concurrent resolution, which would have required Senate approval had it passed through the lower chamber.
After this latest failed vote, Democrats accused Republicans of granting unrestricted power to Trump.
“Service members have been killed, gas prices are soaring, and the US [is] in a worse position than before,” Democratic Representative Bill Foster wrote in a post on X. “Congress cannot abdicate its power as a co-equal branch of government and let this rogue President continue to unilaterally wage war.”
