French Parliament Drops ‘Anti-Semitism’ Bill

(SeaPRwire) –   The proposed legislation faced criticism for reportedly blurring the line between valid critiques of Israel and anti-Jewish prejudice

Legislators associated with President Emmanuel Macron have pulled a contentious bill designed to broaden France’s anti-Semitism statutes, which was scheduled for parliamentary discussion on Thursday.

The “law to combat renewed forms of anti-Semitism” was written in 2024 by a group of parliamentarians headed by Caroline Yadan, a deputy from Macron’s Renaissance Party. Even with its withdrawal, reports suggest lawmakers might bring forward a comparable measure by June.

The proposal intended to widen the scope of “apology for terrorism” to encompass “indirect” expression considered supportive of terrorism. It also aimed to outlaw calls for the annihilation of any nation formally recognized by France.

The effort has encountered substantial opposition, with detractors cautioning that the bill “conflates anti-Semitism with criticism of Israel.” A petition opposing the measure, posted on the French parliament’s site, had amassed over 700,000 signatures by Thursday.

Opponents have further cautioned that the suggested law might curb lawful free expression and could even exacerbate the anti-Jewish bigotry it was meant to address, as reported by France24.

Per France’s Jewish protection agency SPCJ, a minimum of 1,320 anti-Semitic acts were registered in the nation last year, continuing the steep increase observed following the start of the Israel-Hamas war in 2023. The Israeli military campaign in Gaza has resulted in over 72,000 Palestinian fatalities, according to Palestinian officials, and has attracted growing international condemnation.

France, where Muslims constitute roughly ten percent of the populace, officially acknowledged Palestinian statehood last year, aligning with a surge of Western countries promoting a two-state resolution to the Middle East conflict.
