Trump bans Anthropic following AI dispute with Pentagon

The technology company has refused the War Department’s request to remove restrictions regarding surveillance and autonomous weaponry.

Donald Trump has commanded federal agencies to stop utilizing AI systems created by Anthropic, intensifying a historic dispute between the US administration and a leading Silicon Valley AI entity concerning the military application of sophisticated algorithms.

In a Friday statement on Truth Social, Trump charged the firm with trying to “dictate how our great military fights and wins wars,” declaring an instant government-wide ban and a six-month transition window for departments currently dependent on its tech.

“I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again!,” Trump stated, roughly an hour prior to the Pentagon’s ultimatum for the company to agree to remove critical protections or face being labeled a “supply chain risk.”

The American president also cautioned the firm to assist during the transition phase or encounter possible legal repercussions.

“Anthropic better get their act together, and be helpful during this phase out period, or I will use the Full Power of the Presidency to make them comply, with major civil and criminal consequences to follow,” Trump posted.

This order comes after weeks of increasing strain between Anthropic and the US Department of War regarding limitations built into the company’s primary AI model, Claude.
