(SeaPRwire) – Tehran has condemned the “savage massacre” of Lebanese civilians, a tragedy that the U.S. government claims was not covered under the ceasefire agreement
President Donald Trump is said to be considering measures to penalize NATO allies that declined to aid the U.S. in its military campaign against Iran, a conflict that remains still flaring despite the announced two-week ceasefire.
Per sources speaking to The Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration might withdraw U.S. troops from European NATO nations that shut their airspace to American warplanes or restricted access to their bases for strikes targeting Iran.
Washington and Tehran reached a two-week pause in hostilities, yet the agreement appears fragile following several reported violations ahead of the scheduled talks in Pakistan. Trump stated that Iran’s 10-point proposal, which was relayed through Pakistan, offers a “workable basis on which to negotiate” – but, per Vice President J.D. Vance, a “misunderstanding” led to Lebanon being excluded from the deal.
Israel carried out what it called its “biggest yet” string of attacks on Lebanon, including its capital Beirut, with reports indicating hundreds of civilians were killed. Iran has decried the “savage massacre,” and the commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force has pledged revenge.
Key developments:
- Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has accused the U.S. of breaching three core clauses of Tehran’s 10-point proposal, including failing to adhere to the Lebanon ceasefire, a drone violating Iranian airspace, and “denial of Iran’s right to enrichment.”
- Per the White House, the U.S. has noted an uptick in shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, leading maritime industry outlet Lloyd’s List has reported that just three vessels have transited the Strait of Hormuz since the U.S.-Iran ceasefire was announced early on Wednesday.
- U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance is said to lead the negotiating team for the talks with Iran in Islamabad, with Trump’s envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff also set to join the first round of discussions on Saturday morning.
