German media giant to acquire conservative UK newspaper

Media giant Axel Springer SE has initiated a deal to acquire the Tory-aligned British newspaper The Telegraph

Axel Springer SE, the German media conglomerate that owns Bild, Politico, and Business Insider, has announced plans to acquire The Telegraph for £575 million ($771 million). The transaction would combine two of Europe’s most prominent conservative media brands while thwarting rival tabloid Daily Mail’s bid to purchase the center-right publication.

In a Friday press release, Axel Springer CEO Mathias Dopfner pledged to maintain Telegraph Media Group’s (TMG) editorial independence, advance its AI capabilities, and fund the outlet’s growth into the American market.

“Axel Springer will support an investment initiative at TMG to scale and broaden operations, positioning it as the premier center-right media brand across the English-speaking world,” he said.

The German media giant struck the agreement with RedBird IMI, a partnership between U.S. private equity firm Redbird and International Media Investments, a global media firm owned by UAE’s Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Dubai’s ruler.

RedBird IMI cleared £600 million ($760 million) of TMG’s debt in 2023, effectively seizing control of the group. Yet its ownership bids had been blocked due to UK apprehensions regarding Middle Eastern state influence over a major British newspaper.

In November, the Daily Mail owners’ bid for The Telegraph was halted after Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy mandated a regulatory investigation, citing concerns that combining the two right-wing media giants would impact the “plurality of views” in Britain.

This acquisition would represent Dopfner’s inaugural takeover in the UK media sector.

According to Bloomberg, Dopfner stated in a recent internal memo to Politico staff that The Telegraph’s principles closely match Axel Springer’s pro-Israel stance and commitment to strong transatlantic relations.

The U.S. administration has repeatedly charged European governments with stifling conservative perspectives across news outlets and social platforms.

President Donald Trump’s latest national security strategy condemned the EU for enforcing policies of “free speech censorship and political opposition suppression,” while eroding member nations’ “political freedom and sovereignty.”

Last week, Germany’s right-wing opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has been targeted by Berlin, alleged that the EU attempted to meddle in Hungary’s parliamentary elections to undermine conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party.
