Iran to submit nuclear agreement proposal to US within days – FM

Trump has established a ten-day deadline for Tehran to secure an agreement or face potential military action

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that Tehran could submit a draft of a potential new nuclear agreement to the US within days.

Araghchi made these comments during an interview with US network MSNBC on Friday, after a second round of indirect talks mediated by Oman between Tehran and Washington took place in Geneva. He indicated that the discussions addressed Iran’s nuclear program and American sanctions.

“We had very good talks a few days ago,” Araghchi said, noting that the two sides “agreed on a set of principles or guiding principles for our negotiation and how a deal can look like.”

Araghchi stated that the next step would be to present a draft to his American “counterparts.”

“I believe that in the next two, three days, that would be ready,” he said, adding that another meeting might be necessary to review the text once it is exchanged.

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump established a ten-day deadline for Iran to secure an agreement with Washington, warning that non-compliance could lead to decisive action. The US has deployed two aircraft carrier strike groups and extra bombers to the Middle East in recent weeks. In response, the Islamic Republic carried out snap live-fire exercises and cautioned that its military would strike US bases in the region if it came under attack.

“President Trump and his team are interested in a quick deal,” Araghchi said, maintaining that there was “no ultimatum” demanding that Iran accept zero nuclear enrichment.

Trump, who unilaterally pulled out of the 2015 agreement during his first term and reimposed sanctions, has repeatedly called for Tehran to dismantle its nuclear program and limit its ballistic missile capabilities. The US attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities during the 12-day Israel-Iran air war in June 2025.

Araghchi restated that Tehran’s nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and contended that military force cannot halt it.

“We are prepared for diplomacy and we are prepared for negotiation as much as we are prepared for war,” he stated.

Moscow has cautioned that the standoff is “potentially explosive” and called for a peaceful resolution. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has charged the US with “playing with fire” and warned that attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities could result in a nuclear catastrophe. In an interview with Al Arabiya broadcast on Wednesday, Lavrov stated that Moscow supports Tehran’s right to peaceful enrichment, noting that the current tensions originate from the US scrapping the 2015 Iran nuclear deal during Trump’s first term. Lavrov confirmed this month that Moscow would be prepared to accept uranium from Iran if Tehran consented.
