(SeaPRwire) – Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were reportedly slated to travel to the country, while Tehran denied any negotiation plans.
U.S. President Donald Trump has unexpectedly called off a planned trip to Pakistan by special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Meanwhile, Tehran has denied that any discussions were scheduled in the first place.
This decision follows closely on the heels of the trip being promoted as a potential avenue for reviving negotiations with Iran.
“Too much time wasted on traveling, too much work! Besides which, there is tremendous infighting and confusion within their ‘leadership’. Nobody knows who is in charge, including them. Also, we have all the cards, they have none! If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!!!” he posted on Truth Social on Saturday.
When questioned by Axios about whether this indicated a plan to resume hostilities, Trump responded, “No. It doesn’t mean that. We haven’t thought about it yet.”
In the meantime, Iran’s Mehr news agency reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi is still anticipated to visit Pakistan after concluding his trip to Oman and prior to his travel to Russia.
Speaking to reporters later on Saturday, Trump stated that Iran “offered a lot but not enough.” He also claimed to have received a more favorable offer from Tehran just minutes after the cancellation, asserting it arrived “immediately, when I canceled it, within 10 minutes.”
This abrupt change of course underscores the uncertainty surrounding the administration’s recent diplomatic endeavors and Trump’s impatience for swift negotiation outcomes.
Earlier this week, Washington extended the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, anticipating a “unified” proposal from Tehran while maintaining a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports. The ongoing tension around the Strait of Hormuz has impacted global markets, pushing Brent crude prices above $100 per barrel, and Trump has made it clear that there is no definitive timeline for ending the conflict.
The U.S. president further escalated the situation by announcing he had instructed the U.S. Navy to “shoot and kill” any Iranian boats found deploying mines in the waterway. Tehran views the blockade as a direct violation of the ceasefire and contends that any discussions are futile as long as it remains in effect.
