(SeaPRwire) – The president stated the gunman was captured and commended the Secret Service for responding “quickly and bravely”
President Donald Trump was hurriedly removed from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night following what officials called an unspecified security threat.
Secret Service and other law enforcement officers charged into the ballroom as attendees took cover under tables, video from the event shows. White House reporter Jeff Mordock reported hearing “several loud bangs” before Secret Service agents, with weapons out, moved reporters from the room while yelling, “Shots fired.”
Officials had not publicly explained the specifics of the incident immediately afterward, and initial news reports did not conclusively verify a shooting. No injuries were immediately reported.
Trump later posted on Truth Social that “the shooter has been apprehended” and stated that the Secret Service and law enforcement performed a “fantastic job,” acting “quickly and bravely.”
Trump further mentioned that he had advised officials to “LET THE SHOW GO ON,” but law enforcement asked everyone to evacuate the venue “consistent with protocol.”
The U.S. president said he would conduct a press conference from the White House briefing room. Trump also noted that the first lady, the vice president, and all cabinet members were “in perfect condition,” and announced the dinner would be postponed and held again within 30 days.
Video from the location indicates the event prompted a massive security mobilization and instant pandemonium at one of Washington’s most prominent political and media events. The yearly dinner, organized by the White House Correspondents’ Association, had only just started when the disturbance occurred.
